The Invincible City

Whether it’s wandering down a cute alleyway, past an impressive church or through the predominantly granite Avenida dos Aliados downtown, the hilly cityscape of Porto is impressively diverse. Overlooking the Douro River estuary, this merchant city features colorful homes; industrial bridges and the affluent river bank of Foz do Douro.

Is wine your cup of tea? Take a port-wine tour through the wine caves in Vila Nova de Gaia. Interested in architecture? The Clerigos Tower and Sao Francisco Church will inspire visitors. Fancy some culture? Appreciate what Porto has to offer at the Ethnography and History Museum, Modern Art Museum at Serralves and the Casa da Musica Music Hall.

Fresh food can be purchased daily at the Mercado do Bolhao Market in downtown Baixa. More diverse goods are for sale in the shopping center right next to Dragao Stadium, home to FC Porto.

Central Porto is pretty compact and easily walkable.

Central Porto is pretty compact and easily walkable. Lots of interesting things to see and generally good value. Lots of nice restaurants although traditional Portuguese ones are a no-go area for vegetarians. Good cheap public transport by bus and metro. You can buy bus tickets onboard (easy) but the metro requires use of ticket machines which are a real pain - there are no manned ticket offices.

This was my 2nd time in Porto.

This was my 2nd time in Porto. The city is beautiful and walkable, food is amazing, affordable prices and great energy all around. There is plenty to do, but also feel very relaxed just going with the flow. I can return over and over.

    Wear comfortable walking shoes.

Wear comfortable walking shoes. There are many hills and steep steps. Don’t bother with the hop on- hop off bus tours. The commentary is boring and you spend a lot of time in traffic looking at the many new construction sites. Do make use of the walking tours. The history is fascinating and you will find the places worth visiting in more detail. Many beautiful churches and gardens. Walk across the bridges and enjoy the views. Experience the evening Spiritus light show in Clerigos church.

Porto was a lovely city to visit and we are so glad we did.

Porto was a lovely city to visit and we are so glad we did. The restaurants we visited were excellent and the prices were very reasonable. The people of Porto are so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. If you are going, be prepared for how undulating it is, it really is on a steep incline so great doing down but what goes down must go up! Everything is within walking distance with some great places to visit.

Day long trip to Douro valley was definitely a highlight of the visit. Fado performance combined with a tour of the 16th century monastery was a wonderful experience. Lello bookstore , Majestic Cafe and the City Market were all memorable and fun.

I am not a fan of heavy trafficked cities with little greenery so Porto is not for me. On the plus side, they have a good metro system and a nice river, but the city itself is nothing special for me. The old buildings are not exceptional, they are just old and not particularly well kept. I absolutely loathe the way they pave the streets and the pavements, with those tiny cubes making it hard to drag a suitcase. But that's a Portugal issue. But I prefer green areas and lots of nature, not cities, anyway.

The best hotel I have to in Portugal. The property is in an amazing location: very central, yet out of the touristic chaos. I could see the Dom Luis Bridge from my room! The breakfast is nice and the restaurant offers very nice food (and it's relatively well-priced, considering it's a hotel offer... But please, no more herbs in the Club Sandwich ;) ). Would definitely recommend and if I go back to Porto, that's where I want to stay!

One of the best hotels we’ve stayed in while in Portugal! A really well executed new hotel with beautiful details. The staff are all so welcoming, none more so than the bar and restaurant staff who seem to live and breath the hotel and its quirky ethos. Would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Porto. We didn’t have the breakfast but did have dinner and cocktails and both were amazing.

It was the best experience in Portugal so far. We liked everything. The hotel is just a magnificent place, the room is soo stylish and big. We had a little kitchenette with a coffee machine. The breakfast was great. The staff here is super friendly. Thanks to Diana and the lady who is usually near the dining area.

The room was very big compared to other hotels we had in Portugal! We loved the little terrace we had (though there was sometimes pigeon poo). Bed was comfortable. Staff very helpful and loved that the reception was 24/7. Can recommend!
