We really, really liked Chaves. We stayed in the Castelo Hotel which is superb, excellent room - with tea and coffee making facilities! We felt we got a lot of hotel for our money. Very clean and comfortable with excellent staff, helpful and friendly. The castle (museum admission price €1, well worth it just for the views from the top) and its immediate neighbourhood is close by and pleasant to stroll around. An easy walk down to the river brings you to the Roman bridge, a perfect place to sit in the sun and lose an afternoon over a beer or two.
Our first evening meal we had at Taska das Caldas and wished we’d spent our second evening there, too. It’s “characterful”, an “experience” but in a good way! Very friendly host greeted us with a white port, then, because we couldn’t decide on starters, brought lots of lovely taster sized portions. The mains were excellent. No room for dessert we just finished with coffee and were bombarded with shots of various águardentes. Didn’t half sleep well!
The only disappointment was wanting to walk round the park only to find it closed for works.

The city is amazing.
The city is amazing. It has grown so much since I last been there some 30 years ago. The thermae museum is for free and it's very informative, restaurants are abundant and serve great food. Bars ensure some nightlife and the river has many options of entertainment. The kid's park on the main square near the Tamega is of superb quality

Chaves is a very interesting and picturesque town.
Chaves is a very interesting and picturesque town. It has lots of nice, reasonably priced restaurants and bars. We found a nice restaurant just down the stone steps from the Roman bridge. The "house red" was excellent.

Its a small town so everything is within easy walking distance. There were nice restaurants and bakers. The streets in the old part are very narrow with overhanging balconies in different colours. There is a spa taking its water from the hot spring with a range of different treatments.
2 days was long enough though. Unless you want to do day trips with the car to other nearby attractions.
Localation is in a very small village about 5 miles from Chaves. Lovely building set on beautiful gardens and with a swimming pool. The breakfast served is wonderful and the dinning room is amazing. We were totally impressed with the welcome we had and the level of service. The kindness shown to us was execptional and this was very much appreciated.
This hotel is highly recomended and well worth its high rating on Bookig.com If you are going to this area then this is the place tio stay.
I need to start the review by highlighting the lady that was receiving us, very friendly, regarding the place is a very traditional farm with few houses that were kept as much original as possible so it is a great experience for a proper stone regional house. The view to the city of Chaves is amazing
Lots os space to enjoy, playground, car park and that fresh bread from local bakery left on our door was top along with the rest of the breakfast products
The hotel is conveniently located in the city beside the old town.
It hasn’t got its own car park, but you can easily park outside to drop off your luggage and the hotel has an arrangement with a car par very nearby for a reasonable fee.
The room was spacious, well equipped and comfortable.
Breakfast was a good variety of hot and cold food and beverages.
We loved this hotel, which is a converted fortress. It felt like we were living in a historic site or museum. The pool was lovely. Great breakfast (excpet one of the coffee machines was broken when we were there). Easy (but a little hilly) walk to all the main parts of Chaves. A fantastic value - in the US this hotel would easily be 4x as much.
A really nice place about a 10 minute drive from the historical center of Chaves. The people at the hotel are very welcoming and helpful. The room was very clean and comfortable. There’s a nice restaurant for dinner and breakfast is included in the price. There’s on-site parking. We would very happily return.
Great location close to the old town of Chaves.
Friendly staff and fantastic breakfast.
Rooms are spacious, comfortable and clean.
There is an underground parking (you have to pay) or a free parking outside in front of the hotel (where we have parked the car without problems)
Fantastic hotel, with excellent staff. Very accommodating, great facilities and the room was just amazing! We had a private bathroom and a small balcony, the AC worked amazingly (which was a must with the heat) and everything was sparkly clean. We can't wait to come back! :)
Spacious room very clean with terrace and table and chairs - very peaceful . It is a mile or so outside the town of Chaves. The centre of Chaves has a great river with pleasant green areas and walkways along the river - well worth a visit.
The location is unabeatable. We arrived in the hotel, parked the car and did everything on foot
The building is lovely and decoration is a plus - very good taste
The bedroom had enough space and the furniture focused on practicallity
An oasis just off the highway in a small village in farm country. Beautiful stone hotel, gorgeous pool and terraces, fantastic food, welcoming staff. We loved everything about it, could stay there for a week easily and happily.
Very good hotel to stay in the north of Portugal, very good relation between price and service obtain. Breakfast is good and the staff is very kind and they always try to keep costummers satisfy. We will came back for sure!
Fantastic place to stay when in Chaves…Centrally located, clean, safe and friendly!!
absolutely no worries when staying here, perfect place to enjoy the scenic and amazing city that is Chaves
This place is a small well-decorated hotel, near the center of the city and the popular riverside area. You can walk from here to most of the city, the breakfast is also a highlight.
The rooms are so quiet and comfortable, all the staff of the hotel are helpful and friendly. The breakfast is western-style buffet with a wide variety of food but delicious.
Absolutely everything was excellent. This hotel and its location is faultless! I would give 10++
Lots of great restaurants on the beautiful old town close by.
